  1. * The SAF (smoking attributable fraction) is the fraction of the disease in the population that would not have occurred if the effect associated with smoking was absent. It is calculated by means of a formula that combines prevalence of smoking and relative risk of a particular disease. The SAF is then applied to the total number of occurrences of disease to estimate the number of occurrences that are attributable to smoking.
