  1. Abbreviations: IDF International Diabetes Federation, ATPIII Adult Treatment Panel III, Hyper-TG Hypertriglyceridemia, Low-HDL low serum HDL cholesterol, IFG impaired fasting glucose, BP Blood pressure, MetS Metabolic syndrome.
  2. Prevalence of individual metabolic component was estimated using the IDF 2007 and the modified ATPIII definitions. The IDF definition for children from 10 to 16 years included the presence of central obesity (WC ≥ 90th percentile) plus two of the other four factors: (1) Hyper-TG with fasting TG ≥1.7 mmol/L, (2) Low-HDL with HDL-C <1.03 mmol/L, (3) hypertension with SBP ≥ 130 and/or DBP ≥ 85 mm Hg, (4) IFG with fasting glucose ≥ 5.6 mmol/L. IDF criteria for adults were used to define MetS in those aged ≥16 years. The modified ATPIII definition for children was defined by the presence of three or more of the following five components: (1) central obesity (WC ≥ 90th percentile), (2) elevated SBP and/or DBP ≥ 90th percentile, (3) fasting TG ≥ 1.24 mmol/L, (4) HDL-C ≤ 1.03 mmol/L, and (5) fasting glucose ≥ 5.6 mmol/L.
  3. Results are expressed as number with percentage (%). Significance was calculated by χ2 test or Fisher’s exact test among normal weight, over weight and obese groups in both genders.
