  1. Health Risks to Bicycle Riders

Is this proposed study a spoof, perhaps a test whether anyone is paying attention? Clearly, the more visible cyclists are to motorists the lower the probability the latter will hit the former, excepting those motorists who deliberately endanger cyclists.

While collisons between cyclists and motor vehicles are a serious cause of mortality and morbidity to cyclists the fact that they are dramatic may make them more interesting than they should be. More interesting, I should think, is the long term effects on mortality and morbidity of cyclists breathing volatile organic compounds and carcinogenic compounds from motor vehicle exhaust. At least this would be interesting for bicycle commuters as opposed to, say, recreational cyclists who may not ride as much in traffic.

As for reasons that discourage people from bicycle commuting I should think that more mundane factors may loom larger and the fear of injury. This would include getting wet and cold, the expense of proper cycling wet and cold weather clothing, having safe and convenient places to lock up bikes, distances to travel, sitting around in sweaty clothes, and so on.
