The proportion of contacts in each layer of the multiplex network that are present in the other layer. Panel a) shows the proportion of infection layer contacts also present in the communication layer and panel b) show the proportion of communication layer contacts also present in the infection layer. Networks 1-3 have no homophily in either layer, networks 4-6 have homophily in both layers and networks 7-9 have homophily in the communication layer only. In networks 1, 4 and 7 both layers have a relative modularity of 0.4, in networks 2, 5 and 8 both layers have a relative modularity of 0.6, and in networks 3, 6 and 9 the relative modularity of the infection layer is 0.6 and the relative modularity of the communication layer is 0.4
