  3. bType 2 Diabetes Mellitus was defined as a glycated hemoglobin A1c ≥ 6.5%, according to the American Diabetes Association criteria
  4. cMetabolic Syndrome was defined following the International Diabetes Federation criteria: Ethnic-specific central obesity as waist circumference ≥ 90 cm in men and ≥ 80 cm in women for this population, plus any two of the following: elevated triglycerides ≥1.7 mmol/L; reduced HDL-cholesterol < 1.03 mmol/L in men and < 1.20 mmol/L in women; elevated blood pressure as systolic blood pressure ≥ 130 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure  85 ≥mmHg; and previously diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes mellitus
  5. dLarge waist circumference was defined as ≥90 cm in men and ≥ 80 cm in women
  6. eNormal-high blood pressure was defined as systolic blood pressure 130–139 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure 85–89 mmHg, according to the Norma Oficial Mexicana criteria
  7. fHypertension was defined as having a blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg, according to the Norma Oficial Mexicana criteria
  8. gHypertriglyceridemia was defined as triglycerides ≥1.7 mmol/L
