  1. All participants have data on gender (men/women), race (black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, White/Asian, Other), and HIV status (positive/negative) and answered all questions within either or both domains of barriers to care (perceived access to care; barriers to care). Those who refused to answer race/ethnicity questions were categorized under “Other” (n = 22). Those who identified as transgender were not included in the analyses
  2. Percentages are calculated for each characteristic (i.e. Race) within each substance use group
  3. DU illicit drug users, HD hazardous drinkers
  4. aSome of the DU- and DU+ may concurrently use alcohol and marijuana
  5. bHazardous drinking is defined by AUDIT score ≥ 8 (male) and 7 (female)
  6. cSocial support (yes) is assigned to participants who reported having support in the majority of the items on the social support questionnaire (≥3 items)
