Table 1 Glycaemic category [based on concordant paired baseline results] in project 1 and associated randomisation into trial

From: Study Protocol: The Norfolk Diabetes Prevention Study [NDPS]: a 46 month multi - centre, randomised, controlled parallel group trial of a lifestyle intervention [with or without additional support from lay lifestyle mentors with Type 2 diabetes] to prevent transition to Type 2 diabetes in high risk groups with non - diabetic hyperglycaemia, or impaired fasting glucose

Diagnosis

Confirmed diagnosis based on concordant paired results

Randomised to Project

Normal result

Fasting plasma glucose <5.6 mmol/l and HbA1c <42 mmol/mol.

No Trial

Impaired fasting glucose [IFG]

Fasting plasma glucose ≥6.1–<7.0 mmol/l and HbA1c <48 mmol/mol

Project 2

Non diabetic hyperglycaemia [NDH]

HbA1c ≥42–<48 mmol/mol and fasting plasma glucose ≥5.6 to <6.1 mmol/l.

Project 2

Impaired glucose tolerance [IGT]

Fasting plasma glucose <7.0 mmol/l and a 2 h OGTT result of ≥7.8 and <11.1 mmol/l

Project 2a

Type 2 diabetes [T2DM]

HbA1c ≥48 mmol/mol and/or fasting plasma glucose ≥7.0 mmol/l

Project 4

Non diabetic hyperglycaemia [NDH]

HbA1c ≥42 to <48 mmol/mol and fasting plasma glucose <5.6 mmol/l .

Project 6

  1. aIGT: participants with IFG (≥6.1–<7.0 mmol/l) and NDH (≥6.1–<7.0 mmol/l) were invited to undertake an OGTT between 2011 and 2013 for diagnostic reasons to exclude T2DM based on OGTT criteria before UK adoption of HbA1c diagnostic criteria for T2DM [15, 16], but not as a randomisation category
