  1. FBG: fasting blood glucose; IFG: impaired fasting glucose; 2hBG: blood glucose 2 hours after oral tolerance test; NGT: normal glucose tolerance; IGT: impaired glucose tolerance; DM: diabetes mellitus.
  2. DM (2 criteria): FBG ≥ 7.0 mmol/l or history of treatment for DM.
  3. DM (3 criteria): FBG ≥ 7.0 mmol/l, history of treatment for DM, or 2hBG ≥ 11.1 mmol/l.
  4. Oral glucose tolerance test was administered to all individuals with FBG of 5.6–6.9 mmol/l without previous history of diabetes.
  5. Overall prevalence estimates are standardized for age [19].
