At the centre of the model is the individual well-being for social assistance recipients who are chronically ill. The three categories immediately surrounding that (living one day at a time; steps forwards and backwards; escape routes) all influence well-being and interact with one another. Contextual features like the welfare system including rights to benefits and benefit levels, access to and responsiveness of services as well as social relations and networks could buffer or undermine individuals' strategies and their well-being as a whole.Back to article page
